HOW
A CAMPUS NETWORK IS DESIGNED
WHAT IS CAMPUS NETWORK?
The people
new to the networking world they must know what is a campus network..According
to my point of view a campus network is an autonomous network under the management of a single entity.
THE NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE:
To design a
network, your first step is information gathering, planning the network based on the gathered
information. The next step is network designing and modeling .There are
numerous technologies which you can use to build your network but challenge is
to choose the technology that suits best with your goal.
THINKS WE SHOULD CONSIDER WHILE
DESIGNING:
ü
Avoid daisy chain network, build star network.
ü
Make the design modular
ü
Type of media between buildings.
ü
Security measures.
ü
LOS for wireless transmission.
ü
Build separate edge and core networks.
ü
Always route into the core and switch at edges.
HIERARCHICAL CAMPUS NETWORK DESIGN, A three
tier model:
For the quality of service,
follow the hierarchical design. This will make your network understandable and
will help you to troubleshoot the traffic patterns. In the hierarchical design
you can specify the position of a device, its functions and role in the network.
Further in this approach you can expand your network when desired can redesign it,
to meet today’s evolving technologies. The hierarchical design is down in
figure. First is the core layer, which
directly communicates with the outer world, the internet world .The core layer
should be design at layer 3 because it provides fast convergence and efficient
bandwidth utilization. There must be a redundant link at core layer because
faster convergence is needed.
Next is distribution layer
which is multipurpose layer. It is basically a point for all access layer switches.
Load Balancing and QoS should be kept in mind while designing. The access layer
is the end users. The access layer switches are usually connected to the
distribution layer via two switches for redundancy.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A WELL DEFINED
NETWORK:
Following
are the characteristics of a well defined network.
ü
Reliable
ü
Secured
ü
Scalable
ü
Responsively
